To start off with, the crocodile skins are great because its a lovely soft leather that retains its natural structure over the years but there are some rules to observe if you wish to preserve its beauty.
- Because crocodile is a natural leather, its dangerous to leave your bag exposed direct sunlight for a long period of time, as the leather will dry out, crack and fade and will lose its natural sheen.
- Make sure to store your bags in a cool and dry place, and avoid moisture as it can cause the skin to bubble and dry out.
- If your bag needs some quick at home cleaning use warm water and an uncolored rag to lightly clean the surface in the direction of the scales (if its python).
- Do not use any chemicals or cleaners on crocodile leather. This includes cleaning and care products for leathers and shoe products. Most finishes applied to crocodile bags (whether its a matte, glossy or pearlized finish) is usually very thin and can be easily eroded away by these solvents. Once these finishes are removed the leather is more susceptible to drying out.
- When taking your bag to a professional, make sure to research somebody with experience in handling these special skins. Always ask to make sure the cleaners and conditioners they are using are for exotic bags.
- Never use brushes or paper to clean the surface of your bag as this will scratch the finish.
- And finally, remember to condition your bags at least every other month to keep it looking great!
